ABOUT US

The Rutherford Outdoor Coalition was incorporated in May of 2003 as a private non-profit organization whose mission is to promote outdoor recreation in Rutherford County. ROC offers regular outings including hiking, paddling, cycling, running and more. Most of our outings are free and open to anyone. Membership is encouraged but not required to join us on most outings. We host an annual cycling tour and river clean up. We are run entirely by volunteers.

Rutherford County North Carolina - 560 square miles in area - stretches from the Blue Ridge Escarpment down across the Foothills to the Piedmont plateau, the elevation varying from 4000 to 800 feet above sea level.
The topography varies from sheer rock walls that attract dedicated rock climbers to gently rolling, sparsely traveled, country roads that are perfect for cycling.

The most prominent river is the Broad, which starts as a clear mountain cascade in Hickory Nut Gorge, and becomes the wide river indicated by its name by the time it leaves the county. Large tracts of mature hardwood forests are present, including state game lands adjacent to the South Mountain State Park in the northeastern part of the county, and significant holdings by the Nature Conservancy and other conservation organizations in and near the Blue Ridge Escarpment.

Almost entirely rural, the total human population of the county is about 63,000. The purpose of this website is to help you and your family enjoy the outdoors in Rutherford county.
